What is Matka Silk

Matka Silk is a coarse handloom silk thread Largely procured from the states of Karnataka and Kashmir but the spinning of Matka Silk fabric is largely performed in Malda Town and Murshidabad districts in Bengal.

Matka Silk Saree is a rough handloom silk fabric made from the waste Mulberry Silk without taking out its gum part.









THE STORY

Strategically located on the banks of the Ganges River, the Indian silk city, Bhagalpur. During the 7th century, Bhagalpur was famous as a trading hub of silk, but the silk industry is barely 200 years old. Bhagalpur's Silk Institute provides training and education in the silk trade. Although Tussah or Tusser silk is the best-known product of the area, Matka silk is also woven in the region.


FUN FACT

It's called Silk but Not as soft as a regular silk fabric

These Fabrics are slightly thicker than conventional silk, but still very soft, giving it a feel that is somewhere between cotton and cashmere.








MAKE AND MATERIAL

This Silk is made from Mulberry silkworm cocoons but the interesting fact in it is that when sometimes the Worms break the cacoon and fly away the filaments breaks. Broken cacoon does not give long filaments for Mulberry silk. But those broken cacoons are chosen carefully from the other cacoons and boiled in Matka (clay pots). And once it's done the Weaver handspun small filaments very carefully to make it long silk thread and thus the name Matka Silk. Silk made by boiling in Matka...
